Centacare Celebrates 50 years of service in Tasmania
In December 1959, Archbishop Young appointed Fr Clem Kilby, at that time a Curate in the New Norfolk Parish, to set up a Marriage Counselling and Family Welfare Centre, known as the Catholic Family Welfare Bureau (to be renamed Centacare in 1977). From its humble beginnings in an upstairs room of the Church offices on Macquarie St, the agency has grown to providing a broad range of services throughout Tasmania.
Throughout 2010, Centacare will be celebrating their 50th Birthday.
Celebratory functions will be held in each region throughout this year, giving us an opportunity to share the celebration of the work of Centacare with all the staff of the Archdiocese, Parishes, Centacare volunteers, clients and other community groups who have supported Centacare over the past 50 years. Please watch this space for more information.
Centacare delivers a broad range of specialised and professional support, counselling, accommodation, emergency, advocacy, education and training services throughout Tasmania.
Its particular strength is in the family centred approach, recognising that whatever impacts on a family impacts on the children in specific ways. It recognises that children can be major casualties in family disruption and that listening to the voice of children impacts on the long-term consequence for all involved in resolving family conflict.
Services are available to all without discrimination on the basis of age, gender, race religion, physical disability, marital or social status.
